How to Enable Zero-Dollar Checkout in Forms and Surveys

How to Enable Zero-Dollar Checkout in Forms and Surveys

August 25, 20265 min read

If you sell products through Tekmatix Forms and Surveys, there are times when a customer’s final order total may come to $0.

Perhaps they are claiming a completely free offer, using a 100% discount coupon, or selecting products that result in nothing being due today.

Previously, customers could still be asked to enter their credit card details, even though there was nothing to pay.

Tekmatix now gives you more control over this experience with a new Require card for $0 orders setting.

When this setting is switched off, eligible $0 orders can be completed without asking the customer to enter payment details.

What’s New With Zero-Dollar Checkout?

A new Require card for $0 orders toggle is now available inside the Sell Products element in:

  • Forms

  • Surveys

When the setting is turned OFF, Tekmatix can automatically hide the payment fields when the customer’s final order total is confirmed as $0 and there are no future recurring payments due.

The customer can then complete the order without entering credit card details.

This creates a much cleaner checkout experience for free offers.

How Zero-Dollar Checkout Works

Imagine you have a paid product inside a Tekmatix Form, but you provide a customer with a 100% discount coupon.

Once the coupon reduces the total to $0, Tekmatix can automatically remove the credit card fields from the checkout.

The customer simply completes the Form or Survey and submits their order.

The order is still created and recorded inside Tekmatix, so you retain the associated submission and order history.

How to Enable Zero-Dollar Checkout

To allow customers to complete eligible $0 orders without entering their card details:

  1. Open your Tekmatix Form or Survey.

  2. Add or select the Sell Products element.

  3. Find the Require card for $0 orders setting.

  4. Turn the setting OFF.

  5. Save your changes.

When a customer’s order is confirmed as $0 and there is nothing recurring due, Tekmatix will automatically hide the payment fields.

If the setting remains ON, customers will continue to be asked for their card details as normal.

100% Discount Coupons Are Supported

Zero-dollar checkout also works when a coupon reduces a paid order to $0.

For example:

Original order: $100
Discount coupon: 100%
Final total: $0

Once Tekmatix confirms the $0 total, the payment fields can automatically disappear.

This means you can use the same checkout experience for both paid and promotional offers without unnecessarily asking customers for credit card information.

What Happens With Forms and Surveys Inside Funnels?

There is one important setting priority to be aware of.

If your Form or Survey is embedded inside a Tekmatix Funnel, the Funnel-level Require Credit Card setting takes priority over the setting configured within the Sell Products element.

So, if your zero-dollar checkout is not behaving as expected inside a Funnel, check the Funnel payment settings as well as the Form or Survey settings.

When Is a Credit Card Still Required?

Zero-dollar checkout is designed for orders where there is genuinely nothing to charge now or later.

A credit card is therefore still required for:

  • Subscriptions

  • Free trials connected to future payments

  • Orders with a recurring amount

  • Any transaction where Tekmatix cannot confidently confirm that the final amount is $0

For example, a free trial may require no payment today, but a card is still needed because the customer will be charged when the trial ends.

Tekmatix Uses a Safe Fallback

Tekmatix will only remove payment fields when it can confidently confirm that the final order total is $0.

If the system cannot verify the total, the credit card fields remain visible.

This may happen if:

  • The pricing summary has not loaded correctly

  • The customer submits while pricing is still updating

  • A product or variant has just changed

  • A coupon is still being applied

  • An order bump has altered the total

This safeguard helps prevent genuinely paid orders from accidentally being processed as free transactions.

Existing Forms and Surveys Will Continue Working Normally

The Require card for $0 orders setting defaults to ON.

That means your existing Forms and Surveys will continue behaving exactly as they do now unless you intentionally change the setting.

You can therefore enable zero-dollar checkout only on the specific Forms and Surveys where it makes sense for your business.

Free Orders Are Still Recorded

Removing the credit card fields does not mean the transaction disappears from Tekmatix.

Eligible $0 orders are still created and recorded.

This means you can continue tracking:

  • Form and Survey submissions

  • Customer information

  • Order records

  • Product selections

  • Coupon usage

  • Order history

You get the smoother customer experience without losing important business data.

Additional Checkout Improvements

This update also includes several improvements designed to make the checkout experience smoother.

No More Payment Field Flashing

On eligible $0 orders, the payment element should no longer briefly appear before disappearing.

This creates a cleaner checkout experience for customers.

Card Details Are Better Preserved

When a customer is completing a paid order, entered card information is preserved more reliably when they:

  • Change product quantities

  • Apply a coupon

  • Update their order

This reduces unnecessary re-entry during checkout.

Improved Funnel Context for Surveys

Surveys embedded inside Funnels now receive the appropriate Funnel context more reliably, helping the correct payment settings apply during checkout.

What Isn’t Included?

Donation and custom-amount payment types are not affected by this update.

Their existing checkout behaviour remains unchanged.

Why Zero-Dollar Checkout Matters

Asking someone for credit card details when they owe absolutely nothing creates unnecessary friction.

It can also make customers wonder whether they are actually going to be charged.

With zero-dollar checkout in Tekmatix, you can create a more intuitive buying experience while still using the same Forms and Surveys for both free and paid offers.

This is particularly useful for:

  • Lead generation offers

  • Promotional campaigns

  • Complimentary products

  • Scholarship or sponsored access

  • 100% discount campaigns

  • Customer rewards

  • Free event registrations

  • Special customer offers

Instead of building entirely separate checkout experiences, Tekmatix can adapt the payment process based on what the customer actually owes.

Create Smoother Checkout Experiences With Tekmatix

Small checkout improvements can make a significant difference to conversion rates and customer confidence.

With the new Require card for $0 orders setting, you can allow customers with genuinely free orders to complete checkout without handing over unnecessary payment information, while still keeping subscriptions, recurring payments and paid transactions protected.

It means your free and paid offers can live together inside the same Tekmatix Form or Survey, with the checkout experience automatically adapting to the customer’s final order total.
